Restoring a Severely Distorted 18th-Century Painting - Part 2 - Full Lining Process
This is Part 2 of a multi-part conservation series, documenting the real, in depth, methodical process of restoring a fragile early 18th-century portrait.
This video continues the restoration of a severely distorted 18th-century painting, focusing on the structural conservation work that must happen before any surface cleaning can begin.
In this episode, I carry out the full lining and stabilisation process: flattening the canvas, preparing traditional adhesive, attaching the painting to a loom, and gradually returning it to a stable condition. Once the structure is secure, the painting is removed from the loom and carefully restretched.
This stage of restoration isn’t about visual transformation. Without proper structural support, any surface cleaning would be unsafe and potentially damaging.
